BH San Juan Red

The Bead Head (BH) San Juan Nymph is a simple yet highly effective fly pattern, particularly for targeting trout. It’s designed to imitate aquatic worms, a common food source for trout in many freshwater environments.

Materials Used:

• Hook: Typically, a size 10-18 curved nymph or scud hook, like the TMC 2457 or similar.
• Bead: Gold or copper-colored brass bead, sized appropriately for the hook.
• Body: Ultra Chenille or Vernille, often in red, brown, or pink, which imitates the worm’s body. The chenille is usually singed at the ends to prevent fraying.
• Thread: Red, brown, or black 6/0 or 8/0 thread, used to secure the materials and build up the head.
• Optional: Some variations include a rib of fine wire or even a small tag of flashy material at the tail for added attraction.

Target Trout:

The BH San Juan Nymph is particularly effective for targeting trout species such as:

• Rainbow Trout
• Brown Trout
• Cutthroat Trout
• Brook Trout

This pattern works well in various water conditions, especially when trout are feeding near the bottom or when there’s high water or muddy conditions that bring worms into the water column. It can be fished under an indicator or as part of a nymph rig.
