The Deer Hair Egg (Natural) is a single-egg pattern made from natural deer hair, spun and closely trimmed into a round ball. Deer hair is hollow, so the fly is naturally buoyant and drifts with a light, lifelike movement instead of sinking like a bead.

Its natural cream-tan shade imitates an older, faded egg, the most plentiful kind after a spawn. Wary fish often take a muted egg more readily than a bright one, especially in clear or heavily fished water.

How to fish it

  • Rivers: dead-drift below spawning areas under an indicator, with split shot to get it down, often as the lead fly with a nymph trailing behind.
  • Stillwaters: fish it on a sinking line with a longer leader. The buoyant egg rises and hovers between pulls.
  • Stocked waters: a cream deer-hair ball also resembles the feed pellets trout are used to.

Typical materials

  • Hook: Curved grub/scud hook, sizes #10–#16
  • Thread: Cream or tan
  • Body: Natural deer hair, spun and trimmed to a round egg shape
