Articulated Baitfish (Game Changer style)

The Articulated Baitfish is our Game Changer-style streamer, based on the articulated design developed by fly tyer and guide Blane Chocklett. Instead of a single hook shank, the fly is built on a series of small interconnected spines, much like a fish’s backbone. The result is a fly that swims with a smooth, side-to-side serpentine motion on a slow pull, and darts, glides and jackknifes when stripped hard.

That lifelike movement is what makes it so effective on big, predatory and pressured fish that ignore stiffer streamers. It is fished for trophy trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, pike and musky, and inshore saltwater species.

Our version has a body of barred marabou mixed with Enrico Puglisi (EP) fibres, built up in sections to a tapered baitfish profile. The marabou breathes and pulses in the water, while the EP fibres add shape and translucency. It has olive barred silicone legs for extra movement, and painted dumbbell eyes that add weight at the head. Available in olive, black, tan and brown to match local baitfish, sculpins and water clarity.

How to fish it

• Wet it first: dip it before the first cast so the marabou and fibres soak up water and the fly sinks straight away.
• Vary the retrieve: slow, steady pulls give a natural swimming action; sharp strips and pauses make it dart and flash.
• Control the depth: use a floating line for shallow water, or a sink-tip and short leader to fish it deeper.
• Pause: letting it sink between strips often triggers the take. The weighted dumbbell eyes make the nose dip on the pause for an extra jigging movement.
