Category:

The Duracell is a modern competition nymph that has become a staple in Euro nymphing boxes around the world. Like many competition patterns it is simple and slim: a fast-sinking jig fly with just enough flash and movement to get a reaction from trout, even when they are holding tight to the bottom or have seen plenty of flies.

Our version is tied on a jig hook with a gold tungsten bead, a Coq de Leon tail, a slim, sparkling purple body and a soft, mobile collar. The jig hook and bead turn the fly over so it rides point-up and snags less, while the slim profile cuts through the water to reach the bottom quickly. It does not imitate one insect in particular, but suggests a wide range of nymphs, and the purple sparkle stands out in both clear and slightly coloured water.

How to fish it

  • Euro / tight-line nymphing: cast upstream into riffles, runs and pocket water and let it dead-drift close to the bottom.
  • Two-fly rigs: use it as the point (anchor) fly with a lighter nymph or emerger on the dropper.
  • Indicator: it also works well drifted under an indicator.
  • Pressured water: a good change fly when trout ignore more traditional nymphs.

Typical materials

  • Hook: Jig hook
  • Bead: Slotted gold tungsten bead
  • Tail: Coq de Leon fibres
  • Body: Purple flash dubbing
