Montana Chartreuse

The Montana Chartreuse Nymph without a beadhead is a classic and simple pattern that remains effective for targeting various trout species. Its bright chartreuse body makes it stand out in murky waters, while the traditional nymph design imitates large aquatic insects like stoneflies.

Materials Used:

• Hook: Size 8 to 12, 2X long nymph hook.
• Thread: Black, 6/0 or 8/0.
• Tail: Black goose biots or a small bunch of black hackle fibers.
• Body: The rear section (abdomen) is chartreuse chenille or synthetic dubbing, while the front section (thorax) is black chenille or synthetic dubbing.
• Ribbing: Copper or gold wire, used to segment the abdomen and add durability.
• Hackle: A collar of black hackle or soft hen hackle, tied just behind the thorax area.

Target Species:

The Montana Chartreuse Nymph is effective for targeting:

• Trout (Brown, Rainbow, and Cutthroat Trout)
• Steelhead
• Bass (in some waters)

Without the beadhead, this fly can be fished in slower water or shallower runs where a more natural drift is desired. It can also be fished under a strike indicator, allowing the angler to control the depth. The lack of weight makes it ideal for a more delicate presentation, particularly in situations where trout might be spooked by heavier, faster-sinking flies.
