Green butt skunk

The Green Butt Skunk is a popular salmon and steelhead fly pattern, known for its vibrant color contrast and effectiveness in attracting fish. While primarily designed for salmon and steelhead, it can also be used to target large trout, particularly in larger rivers.

Materials Used:

• Hook: Size 4 to 10, typically a salmon or steelhead hook.
• Thread: Black, 6/0 or 8/0.
• Tail: White calf tail or bucktail.
• Body: The rear section (butt) is green floss or yarn, and the front section is black chenille or wool.
• Ribbing: Silver tinsel (optional).
• Wing: White calf tail or bucktail, extending past the body.
• Hackle: Black saddle hackle, palmered through the body.

Target Species:

While the Green Butt Skunk is traditionally a salmon and steelhead fly, it can also be used to target:

• Large Trout (such as Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout)
• Steelhead
• Pacific Salmon (such as Chinook and Coho)

This pattern is particularly effective in deeper runs and pools, where its contrasting colors make it highly visible and appealing to fish. The fly is often fished in rivers, swung downstream, or stripped through likely holding water.
