This Red Deer Hair Bass Bug is a bold and eye-catching topwater fly designed to imitate small baitfish or large insects like frogs. With a combination of a red deer hair head and tail made from feathers, this pattern excels at attracting aggressive strikes from predatory fish, especially bass. The addition of 3D doll eyes increases realism, making this an ideal fly for surface action.

Materials:
1. Hook: Wide-gap bass bug hook, sizes 1/0 to 4, depending on the size of the bass and conditions. Mustad 3366 or Gamakatsu B10S hooks are commonly used.
2. Thread: Red, 3/0 or 6/0, strong enough to secure the spun deer hair.
3. Head:

• Material: Spun and trimmed red deer hair. The hair is spun around the hook shank, then trimmed to form a rounded or slightly conical shape that pushes water, creating a “popping” action when stripped through the water.

4. Eyes: Black and white 3D doll eyes, glued securely onto the deer hair head. These eyes create a lifelike appearance and help attract fish.
5. Tail: A combination of orange and red  hackle feathers. The tail gives the fly lifelike motion, fluttering in the water to mimic a wounded baitfish or large insect.

• Flash: A few strands of crystal flash are tied into the tail to add extra shimmer and visibility.

6. Weed Guard (Optional): A mono loop weed guard, as seen in the image, prevents the hook from snagging on vegetation, making this fly perfect for fishing around weeds, lily pads, and other cover where bass often lurk.

Techniques for Spinning Deer Hair:

• Deer Hair Head: The red deer hair is tightly spun and trimmed to form the head, which gives the fly buoyancy and helps it pop and splash on the surface, mimicking prey that is struggling or fleeing.
• Tail Movement: The use of soft materials like  hackle feathers gives the fly a flowing, undulating tail that mimics a baitfish swimming or injured prey, enticing strikes from bass.

Target Species:
This Red Deer Hair Bass Bug is primarily designed for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass, but it can also work well for other species like pike, muskellunge, and even large trout. The vivid red color and popping action make it particularly effective in low-light conditions (early mornings, late evenings) or in stained water, where the bold color can be easily seen.

The fly is best fished around structure like weed beds, lily pads, or fallen logs, where predatory fish wait in ambush. A stripping retrieve that causes the fly to pop and gurgle across the surface mimics a wounded or distressed baitfish, drawing aggressive surface strikes.
