Elk Hair Caddis

The Elk Hair Caddis is a versatile and highly effective dry fly pattern designed to imitate adult caddisflies. It’s a staple in many anglers’ fly boxes due to its ability to float well and its effectiveness in a variety of fishing conditions.

Materials Used:

• Hook: Standard dry fly hook, typically sizes 12-18 (e.g., TMC 100 or Mustad R50-94840).
• Thread: Black, brown, or tan 6/0 or 8/0 thread.
• Body: Dry fly dubbing in tan, olive, brown, or gray to match the natural caddis color.
• Ribbing: Fine gold or copper wire, used to reinforce the body and add segmentation.
• Hackle: Dry fly rooster hackle in brown, grizzly, or ginger, palmered over the body.
• Wing: Elk hair, typically natural or bleached, tied in over the body to create a wing that extends slightly past the bend of the hook.
